What would you do if you got a chance to change the timeline? As a long-time Dragon Ball fan from watching the original to Z and now Super, the only thing I would change in the timeline is making the battles a bit shorter (laughs). Welcome to Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and as a Time Patroller siding with Trunks, continuing the battle with the Z fighters against forces trying to screw with time itself, is a struggle.
It is now two years after the events of the first Xenoverse where we kind of left things in peace. This time around the Time Patrol has expanded and as the protagonist you not only have to save the timeline but make crucial decisions that could fix or break the time itself. Towa and Mira are now growing their own forces to fight against the Time Patrol with an unknown masked Saiyan. Things are getting quite heated as we now have to go through the timeline once again and stop this alliance while a new universe is being born thanks to a special bird named TokiToki…okay that is just weird.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 brings a nice amount of fan service: the good news is that we don’t have to worry about GT anymore. The bad news is that there is not much difference from the previous title that was only out a year and half ago. When Xenoverse debuted, it was a great concept in giving players the ability to be in the world instead of playing as characters of the Dragon Ball universe. You still have the option of playing as the famed characters, but it is better to give fans or other gamers that opportunity to be next to their favorite characters or fight against them.
Xenoverse 2 still features all the bells and whistles of the previous game as well as letting you import your character over from Xenoverse, but with a warning. Since I am a Saiyan I could not transfer my abilities to my character. This time around you can play as Frieza which brings in the curiosity of being a villain. There is a slight choice system involved this time around to change the course of the timelines. In some quests, you can join factions and since I went to Frieza’s ship, they were telling me about joining that faction and working under Frieza. That’s pretty neat if they allowed you to truly go the villain route and work for Mira instead of always playing the hero.
There is not much good I can say about Xenoverse 2 being that it is a copy-and-paste sequel. There are some slight changes, but I have to agree with other gamers that this could have easily been an expansion instead of a sequel. As I have stated in my video below, it is hard to make a sequel to an MMO style game. I mean take WoW for example, it’s filled with expansions, not sequels. This to me is a waste of time and money to buy a new game instead of just adding to the already great universe of Xenoverse. It just feels like a sequel with the soul purpose of “just because.”
For $49.99 or $79.99 for the game, new missions, new masters and a bigger city, it is not really worth that much. I can’t say I trust a series with potential to grow only to bring on a sequel with just a few pieces added. The saving graces are the battles and customization, but at the same time, you will get that “did this already” feeling quickly. I can’t say rent it, but if you are new to the series that works best for you, but for those that previously played it is a rip-off. Not expecting much, but please just expand on this game instead of next year coming out with a 3rd installment.
What are your thoughts on this sequel? I do hope you enjoy don’t be shy leave a comment below.
